Villa Eläintarha

UPDATE / 8 January 2024

About Villa Eläintarha in 2024: due to a delay in Helsinki City procurement process, Villa Eläintarha residency activities will be closed during the first six months (approx.) of 2024 . At the moment we don’t have any more detailed information about the schedule of this process. For the time being we are not making any residency reservations for 2024. We will update more details here, once more information becomes available.

HIAP has been running the Villa Eläintarha residency programme in collaboration with the City of Helsinki during the period 2019-2023. During the first four years, the Villa hosted a total of 442 residents from 46 countries. The residency operations were disrupted earlier in 2024 due to a broken water pipe. The organisation to run the Villa Eläintarha residency programme during the next three years (2024-2026) will be selected by the Helsinki City with the procurement process.

Villa Eläintarha is an artist residency in a wooden villa in the centre of Helsinki, next to Töölönlahti bay. The minimum duration of a residency is three days and the maximum two months.

The reservations for Villa Eläintarha are coordinated by HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme. In the selections production residencies (residencies that aim for a realisation or presentation of a piece of work in Helsinki) are prioritized. HIAP does not provide support for the realisation of projects or for local networking, this support is provided by the organisations that invite the residents (festivals, galleries, museums, etc).

The residencies can also be applied by individual artists who don’t have an inviting organisation.

The residency is made possible with the support from the City of Helsinki and is developed further in dialogue with the city.
